چکیده

Special classes of asynchronous e-learning systems are the intelligent tutoring systems which represent an advanced learning and teaching environment adaptable to individual student’s characteristics. Authoring shells have an environment that enables development of the intelligent tutoring systems. In this paper we present, in entirety, for the first time, our approach to research, development and implementation related to intelligent tutoring systems and ITS authoring shells. Our research relies on the traditional intelligent tutoring system, the consideration that teaching is control of learning and principles of good human tutoring in order to develop the Tutor–Expert System model for building intelligent tutoring systems in freely chosen domain knowledge. In this way we can wrap up an ongoing process that has lasted for the previous fifteen years. Prototype tests with the implemented systems have been carried out with students from a primary education to an academic level. Results of those tests are advantageous, according to surveys, and the implemented and deployed software satisfies functionalities and actors’ demands. 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A Knowledge Acquisition System for Constraint-based Intelligent Tutoring Systems

Building a domain model consumes a major portion of the time and effort required for building an Intelligent Tutoring System. Past attempts at reducing the knowledge acquisition bottleneck by automating the knowledge acquisition process have focused on procedural tasks. We present CAS (Constraint Acquisition System), an authoring system for automatically acquiring the domain model for non-proce...

Bypassing the Intractable Problem of Student Modelling

This paper attempts to rehabilitate student models within intelligent tutoring systems. Recently, some researchers have questioned both the need for detailed student models and the practical possibility of building them. We regard it as axiomatic that any intelligent tutoring system needs a student model. This paper suggests some practical guidelines and changes in philosophical approach which ...

Curriculum Tree: A Knowledge-Based Architecture for Intelligent Tutoring Systems

This paper describes a knowledge-based architecture, called curriculum tree, for building intelligent tutoring systems. Primarily based on the subject domain knowledge structure, the architecture naturally incorporates the global curriculum planning and monitors the local learning activities. The curriculum tree can also be viewed as a structure of various teaching knowledge at different stages...

Building Intelligent Tutoring Systems for Ill-Defined Domains

Domains in which traditional approaches for building tutoring systems are not applicable or do not work well have been termed "ill-defined domains.” This chapter provides an updated overview of the problems and solutions for building intelligent tutoring systems for these domains. It adopts a presentation based on the following three complementary and important perspectives: the characteristics...

Building Intelligent Tutoring Systems: An Overview

This chapter addresses the challenge of building or authoring an Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS), along with the problems that have arisen and been dealt with, and the solutions that have been tested. We begin by clarifying what building an ITS entails, and then position today's systems in the overall historical context of ITS research. The chapter concludes with a series of open questions an...
